Electronic Consultation Program Improves Rheumatology Care Access and Delivery

A study supported by the Foundation recently found that electronic consultation (eConsult) programs can make rheumatology referrals timelier and more efficient for patients.

Through eConsults, primary care providers can securely connect with rheumatology specialists through the electronic medical record to seek expert guidance on evaluating symptoms, ordering appropriate tests, and determining next steps in care. In many cases, specialists can provide recommendations without requiring an in-person visit — helping streamline the referral process.

How eConsults May Improve Patient Care:

  • Faster answers, faster care: Patients can receive specialist input within days rather than waiting weeks or months for an appointment – reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment.
  • More coordinated care: Primary care clinicians and rheumatology specialists collaborate more seamlessly, leading to clearer care plans and more consistent follow-through.
  • Fewer unnecessary appointments: Some concerns can be resolved electronically, allowing patients to avoid travel, time off work, and additional medical visits when they aren’t needed.
  • Better access for those who need it most: By addressing straightforward questions electronically, rheumatologists can focus in-person appointments on patients with more complex or urgent conditions.
