Dr. Kaleb Michaud, recipient of a 2023 Innovative Research Award is exploring how people with rheumatic diseases are using cannabis to manage pain, sleep, and quality of life—while also examining what doctors know and believe about its use. The goal? To create clearer, evidence-based guidance that helps patients use cannabis safely and effectively.

Dr. Deepak Kumar, 2023 Innovative Research Award recipient, is tackling disparities in knee osteoarthritis care among Black adults, who often face greater pain and less access to treatment. Researchers are testing a new program that combines virtual physical therapy, mental health support, and digital tools—all tailored to the needs of the community. These innovations are all about listening, learning, and creating care that truly fits people’s lives.
